Friends Hut

In 1980, two airplanes collided near Maroon Pass. The passangers were from Aspen and Crested Butte, Colorado. The Friends Hut was built in memory of these passengers and was built to be used as a link between the two Colorado towns. The Friends Hut is actually incorporated as a non-profit under a special use permit by the U.S. Forest Service. The goal of the non-profit is much the same as Rocky Mountain Adventure Rentals and that is to provide a unique experience to back country travelers. The Friends Hut is located at 11,370' on the South Side of Pearl Pass in the Elk Mountains. It's worth noting that the Friends Hut and other huts in the Braun system are located in areas that are known for avalanches with recurring avalanche cycles. The routes leading into the Friends Hut are unmarked and are not maintained. These huts are only for the experienced back country traveler. The Friends Hut is managed by the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association and all reservations should be made at huts.org
