Don’t let the name fool you… the enormous Four Mile Recreational Area located just two miles outside of Buena Vista is a local favorite for good reason. Endless adventure abounds from its nearly 100,000 acres of public lands awaiting your discovery. There are plenty of fun trails to explore offering some great climbs and descents for new drivers as well as challenging terrain for the more experienced operator. Four Mile falls in the eastern portion of the valley making it more arid, though some areas do feature mature hard wood growth. This leaves the space open to some amazing views of the Collegiate Peaks Range which spans from Buena Vista to nearly Salida.
A favorite among our riders is the Fourmile Area Trail. This 11.5 mile moderately trafficked loop trail that can be accessed from our starting point and taking County Road 376 which features beautiful wild flowers and spectacular views along the way. This is a great trail for all skill levels and provides a thorough introduction into the area’s diverse geology with creek crossings, rock climbs, grassy pastures, dense forest, and a partial traversing of Limestone Ridge.
Another trail that never disappoints is County Road 375 all the way to County Road 377 (about 4 miles), and then 377 until it dead ends (about 2.75 miles). This trail provides a panoramic view of Mt. Harvard, Mt. Yale and Mt. Princeton unsurpassed by any other trail. The breathtaking beauty of the landscape provides the picture-perfect opportunity for that quintessential Colorado photo filled with majestic peaks. You’ll also be able to view the Arkansas River appearing as a distant silver ribbon carving its way through the valley below.
With plenty of places to camp in Four Mile, an option for out-of-towners to consider is finding a good campsite and then using it as a base of operation during a full-day rental. This allows for easy access to your personal belongings, ease of lunch preparation, and general area familiarity while exploring these special lands.
